(price-clipped) [good solid copy, light shelfwear to bottom edge, slight age-toning to top edge and fore-edge, one-time owner's signature on ffep, partially on top of which has been pasted another one-time owner's bookplate; jacket is worn, with numerous chips along top and bottom edges, slight sunning to spine]. Spiritually-themed novel, about a motley group of people on a merchant ship that's crossing the Indian Ocean: an aristocrat and her military husband, the son of an American millionaire, a chewing-gum manufacturer, a couple of missionaries and their kids, a tyrannical Senator and his wife, a couple of gangsters, an agnostic professor, a "mysterious Asiatic," and so on. But -- spoiler alert! -- a fire breaks out, the ship explodes, and everybody dies. But seeing as how we're only on page 28, that's just the setup; the remaining 200+ pages (following a disclaimer that the book "is in support of no religious or occult doctrine, or of any spiritualistic theory concerning 'the other world'") are all about how the various characters cope with their own personal after-death experiences. One of the reviews quoted on the rear jacket panel indicates that "Ryland Kent" is a pseudonym, but nobody seems to have ever figured out the author's real identity; he (she) apparently never wrote another book under that name. (Your purchase of this book will entitle you to take a crack at the mystery yourself.)
