[moderately shelfwear, bumping to top corners; jacket heavily worn, moderately soiled, chipping to spine extremities, 2-inch tear at bottom front hinge with a little paper loss, split at front foldover about 3 inches up from bottom, ditto rear foldover about one inch]. One of the great novels to come out of its author's World War II experience, in this case centering around Pearl Harbor, where Jones was stationed before, during and immediately after the Japanese attack. Filmed to great Academy Award-winning effect by director Fred Zinnemann in 1953, with a raft of stellar performances -- Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Frank Sinatra, Donna Reed, Ernest Borgnine, each and every one absolutely superb. (Sinatra and Reed took home two of the film's eight Oscars; it also took the Best Picture prize, and the directing and writing awards, to Zinnemann and Daniel Taradash respectively.) One of the rare instances where a movie adaptation lives up to the book -- no small feat, considering the numerous censorship problems presented by Jones's book at a time when the Production Code still held sway over the U.S. film industry. The jacket on this copy, unfortunately, looks like it may well have been through the war itself.
