[book is lightly shelfworn, with slight deterioration to binding at spine ends, a modest bump to the upper front corner, and a one-time owner's name and date of acquisition (Christmas 1936) on the front endpaper; the jacket has a number of tiny nicks and chips along both the top and bottom edges]. "Speed of itself is not dangerous. Slowness is not of itself safe. Automobiles on the roads of America tomorrow will go faster, not slower, and the problem of today and tomorrow is not how to slow down, but how to bring about greater safety with the higher speeds. A fast drive can be a safe driver. A slow driver can be a menace on the roads -- and often is." My favorite chapter is entitled "If You Drive Seventy," in which the author narrates the reader through a drive at that speed -- and then pushes it to eighty, and then goes into encouragement mode: "Let's see what she's got. / Eighty-one. / Eighty-o-n-e. / Guess that's all she's got. / No. / Creeping up. / Eighty-two." The Foreword is by Captain Edward V. Rickenbacker -- better known as "Eddie" -- the World War I flying ace who also had a significant career in automobile design and as a race-car driver.
