DETAILS NEEDED. (B&W photographs) "Set in the rice-growing country of northern California," this vanity-press novel "is alive with the burgeoning ferment, conflict and passion of that sun-drenched land. All the characters have a ring of reality which is in perfect keeping with the vivid background." The plot has to do with a man who kills another man in a drunk-driving accident, which sends him into a paroxysm of guilt (the metaphorical cage of the title) -- but there's a twist: "He could not guess that the woman he was to fall in love with and marry five years later would be the widow of his victim. Or that he would adopt her two fatherless boys and become deeply attached to them." As with so many vanity-press novels, particularly those with specific geographical locations, one is always tempted to wonder if the plot might be the author's fictionalization of a real-life local incident or scandal. (For whatever it's worth, laid in to this copy at the rear of the book is a newspaper clipping about the death of the author's husband, accompanied by a post-it note on which is scribbled a little more biographical information about the author. Also perhaps worthy of note is that the four small photographs that appear near the front of the book area all of rice-dredging machinery.)
