(price-clipped) [modest shelfwear, slight soiling to cloth at lower edges of covers, a couple of tiny ink marks on bottom edge of text block; the jacket is a bit edgeworn]. A "suspenseful and vivid novel" centered around three women and five men, "New Yorkers all, [who] are yearning for the same thing: to love and be loved." The author, once known as Bubbles Schinasi before she married movie actor Wayne Morris and subsequently (and permanently) producer Arthur Hornblow Jr., was a well-connected socialite in New York -- "a city to which she is addicted," claimed her jacket bio, "although she lives in Los Angeles, California" due to her movie-biz marriages. She had written one previous novel, a Hollywood tale called "Memory and Desire," and later in life collaborated with her husband on a number of nature-themed books for young readers, as well as turning out a biography of Cleopatra for the juvenile market. (One cannot help but notice that all her books -- both novels and the kid stuff -- were published by Random House. Couple that with the knowledge that RH co-founder Bennett Cerf and his wife Phyllis (who actually is credited with the rear-panel author photo) were long-standing members of Leonora's social circle, and you can draw your own assumptions.)
