[nice clean book with minimal handling wear; jacket lightly browned at edges of rear flap, a bit of smudging at top of rear panel and along rear joint, tiny chip and unobtrusive short crease at top of front panel]. The author's first and only novel, written when he was working as a copy editor in the press office of RKO Pictures; although he apparently took a sabbatical (per the jacket bio, "I decided to write a book and went to Paris for six months, where I wrote it"). A tale of Ireland, of "Shane Conor, of the County Kerry, his son, Shane Erskine, rebel extraordinary, and the love of Rosaleen Fair," the book was apparently well-received, but he ended up back in Hollywood anyway, where he eventually worked his way into a decidedly minor screenwriting career (THE CROWD ROARS and KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY being about his only really notable credits). The novel, interestingly, is dedicated to actress Diana Wynyard, who at the time of the book's publication had just returned to England following a brief stint in Hollywood, the highlight of which was her nomination for the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in CAVALCADE. Perhaps Lennon was hoping for a sale to the movies, and was putting in a not-too-subtle casting suggestion -- although D.W. was hardly the fiery Irish colleen type -- or maybe he was just infatuated.
