[nice clean book, bumped at several corners, front hinge partially cracked; jacket has numerous small edge-tears, minor paper loss at a couple of corners Novel set in "the England of the back street and the pub and the mews," featuring as its central figure "Charles Honey, the one-eyed junk dealer, out of a shadowy past, somehow mysteriously connected with a drum and a monkey. Lovable, oppressed by a desire for better surroundings, his life seems to come finally to blossom in the first of his son, Bicky. Thenceforth his whole life is reshaped by his desire to life Bicky up into the beauty of a better life." However, "the whole pull of the Street itself conspire to take Bicky from his father." Manning-Sanders (previously just George Sanders; when he married poet/author Ruth Manning in 1911, they both adopted the hyphenated form) was a minor British artist who for a few years also became a minor British novelist, publishing four novels between 1929 and 1932, of which the present book was the first. He will no doubt remain forever in the shadow of his more prolific wife, who wrote something like ninety books, mostly for children, over a span of seventy years!
