[sharp-looking copy with only minimal wear to book and jacket] "This remarkable first novel tells the story of a New England rebel. Dixi's love for Ruth and for their illicit child, and Esther's love for Dixi, are strands in a pattern that includes hate and superstition, midnight encounters, tarrings and featherings, evangelism and human sacrifice." ("A special edition, limited to 100 numbered copies, was hand-set, printed from type and bound by the author in 1928.") The author, middle-aged at the time this book appeared, had been "discovered" and more or less sponsored by poet and literary editor Alfred Kreymborg, who was responsible for a number of modernist and literary magazines in the 1910s and 1920s (he is also often credited as the "discoverer" of poet Marianne Moore).
