[nice solid clean copy, slight wear to top of spnie; jacket has a tiny bit of paper loss at spine ends, a couple of tiny nicks and tears]. "A Novel of London Journalism" (per the front jacket subtitle), which a contemporary reviewer, while noting that "the Fleet Street novel is no novelty," at the same time praises this example for its "fairly amusing picture of the grubbier side of the yellow '90s." The author (1870-1929) at least knew wherefrom he wrote, having worked for decades as an editor, investigative reporter, dramatic critic, war correspondent (covering the Russo-Japanese war), book reviewer, and political reporter for various British newspapers and magazines, as well as writing more than a dozen novels and contributing articles to many of the leading periodicals of the day. Quite a scarce book, originally published in London by Duckworth & Co. in 1923.
