[very nice copy, minor light staining near top of front cover, vintage bookseller's label on rear pastedown (from San Francisco department store, The White House); jacket shows a little wear along top edge, one tiny closed tear at top of front panel, some abrasions on spine, very slight paper loss at spine ends]. "A very clever novel of self-created dual personality." A strange sort of novel -- one might call it psychological fiction -- in which the protagonist goes through his life generally making a success of things, being greatly admired by his friends and associates, making a successful marriage, and so on -- yet all the while feeling himself to be a "rotter" inside, who is merely putting on an act for the rest of the world, pretending to be a better person than he really is -- but by so doing, he essentially "makes himself over in his own image." Originally published in England as "Himself and Mr. Raikes."
