[moderate edgewear to covers, scuffing to rear cover next to spine]. Trade PB INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the inside front cover: "For Mort / I sincerely hope / the poems bring / some joy and / understanding of / our great game of / football, / Tom Bass." Yep, despite the locker-room real dope suggested by the book's title -- not to mention the full-rage aggression displayed by the cover photo of the author -- this is in fact a slim volume of poetry, in what one might call the Athletic Brutalist School. (I just made that up.) Sample stanza: "There can be no doubt / who will be the loser / in the end / but I / I would have it / no other way / Pro Football / is my way of life / and part of me shall die / the year / I can no longer play." There's a little poignancy to that last stanza, in fact, since the author's playing career was cut short when contracted polio in college. However, he did go on to enjoy a 30-year career in various coaching capacities at both the college and pro levels (including stints as Defensive Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Diego Chargers for eight seasons in the late 1970s-early 1980s). One of his first gigs as a coach was with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969, so it's appropriate that the book's Foreword is by the Sports Editor of the Cincinnati Post. Signed by Author
