Treatise on the economic conditions facing the American theatre in the late 1920s, historically interesting from at least two particular perspectives: (1) being just prior to the stock market crash in October 1929 (the book was ; and (2) appearing in the midst of the movies' transition from silents to talkies. The book is primarily organized in three sections, "Organization" (Equity; Labor Affiliations; The Road; Box Office), "Complications" (Morals, i.e. Censorship; Hits; Movies), and "Personalities" (Producers; Dramatists), with an additional short chapter called "By Products: Little Theatres." The author (1896-1943) was a drama critic for several New York newspapers during the 1920s and 1930s.
