Novel about "a marriage between a wealthy Californian and an English girl based on mutual love but nevertheless threatened by the girl's continuing difficulties of adjusting to a life of exhile in California." (Baird & Greenwood 2465). The book was praised by the New York Times reviewer for its "honesty, intelligence, and power of understanding." The author was English-born, but had lived in California (where he'd been involved in land speculation) during the 1880s and 1890s, and drew on that experience for a number of novels (he wrote over fifty, as well as numerous plays, short stories, and essays).
