Seven Times Seven: An Autobiography

(frontispiece portrait) Autobiography of the Kentucky-born writer and suffragette (1872-1924), published just a few months before her death, from heart failure. Her early education and professonal activity had been centered around painting (and to a lesser extent photography), but after a two-year sojourn in Europe (1902-1904) and a brief career as a teacher following her return to America, she turned to writing full-time, beginning with short stories. She published her first novel, "Miss Selina Lue and the Soap-box Babies," in 1909, and fifteen more followed over the next decade or so, until her health began to fail due to the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. Near the end of her writing career, her work seems to have been "discovered" by the movies, as film versions of two of her novels and a play appeared in 1918. Although she doesn't write about any personal experiences with the film business (and in fact may well have not been directly involved) -- as opposed to the creation of a Broadway play based on her book "The Melting of Molly," to which she devotes quite a few pages -- she does seem to have taken on a bit of cinematic consciousness, so to speak, and has organized her life story into seven "reels," each consisting of seven years, more or less (hence the book's title) and consistently employs language suggesting that she's reviewing her life as one would a movie, e.g.: "Of what followed the tragedy I get only two pictures, mere flashes on the screen." Reprinted by Arno Press in their "Signal Lives" series in 1980, but scarce in the marketplace in any edition.
