[lightly shelfworn, slight bumping to all corners; jacket well-worn, with paper loss at most corners and along top and bottom edges of front panel, long ragged (but neatly closed) tear in rear panel]. (B&W halftone photographs, maps INSCRIBED fulsomely and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "Presented to / Mrs. J.W. Kirchoff / In appreciation of her / interest in a progressive and / integrated America and in / admiration of her creative / inclinations. / Lee K. Kassarjian / 2306 Duane St. / L.A. 39 / NO-2-9803 / Los Angeles / May 6, 1953." A memoir of persecution, by an ex-priest of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Los Angeles, who had been booted out, "disgraced and blacklisted for refusing to become a tool in the hands of his superiors" -- who, he claimed, were maneuvering "behind the cloak of righteous American citizenship [to foment] unrest and confusion in the parishes, propagandizing communism among their youths." Although "twice deported upon false testimony," the author perservered, forming (what else) the Reformed Armenian Apostolic Church, from the pulpit of which he continued to rail against the insidious communism that he believed plagued both his former church and his Armenian homeland, then under Soviet domination. A prefatory note states that "the author has exhibited to the publisher numerous documents, letters, and newspaper clippings [which] substantiate and prove his accusations to be true in every detail. These documents have been safely stored away to prevent their falling into the hands of the author's antagonists." (And where are they today, I wonder) Laid in to this copy of the book, by the way, is a one-page flyer about Dr. Kassarjian and a list of the many talks and lectures he was ready to deliver under the auspices of something called the Institute of Mental Health.
