(no dust jacket, likely as issued) [a handsome copy in attractive marbled boards, with a firm binding and just a bit of bumping at several corners]. Fantasy novel with heavy spiritual overtones, about a group of six characters (including a bank cashier absconding with some stolen securities, an unsuccessful playwright and his unfaithful wife; and a Vermont farm couple) who all die in one way or another, and upon finding themselves "passed over" into the world of the afterlife, spend the better part of the novel trying to figure out what it all means. Many of this New Hampshire-born author's works were in the "local color" vein, but she ventured into fantasy territory often enough to warrant multiple listings in Bleier; both this book and "The Wind Between the Worlds," a 1920 novel about communication with the dead, are cited therein, and she also produced quite a bit of short fiction in the supernatural vein. The first edition was published by Macmillan in the same year; a title-page note states that "this edition [was] printed, designed and bound exclusively for Pacific Library Association members by the Macmillan Company." I've been unable to uncover any information about the Pacific Library Association; an OCLC search turns up only seven titles (including this one) for which they are attributed as publishers, all from 1931 or 1932.
