[book is very worn, the hinges/binding intact but not much else going for it, between the turned spine, soiling to page edges, grease-pencil X on the ffep, etc.; the jacket's an even bigger mess, missing large pieces at the bottom of both the front and rear panels, and the lower two inches or so of the spine; it's a READING copy, OK] Novel set in the "glorious days before the Crash," about "the complete egotist -- a tycoon who ruled a score of lives by the divine right of dollars, who valued having dependents because it gave him a sense of power -- done into a brilliant and fascinating portrait of the modern robber-baron. He guessed right when the whole country was guessing wrong. He sold everything, invested in government bonds, and cleared out for the south of France before the market went haywire." (At one point, he discovers that his son, "who went Bolshevik on him at Harvard," is contributing half his generous monthly allowance to the Sacco and Vanzetti defense fund.) Very scarce early work (his second book) by the author of "Goodbye to Uncle Tom," "The Road to Harpers Ferry," and other works of popular American history.
