[lovely clean book with just a trace of wear at spine ends, attractive vintage bookplate on front pastedown (with the one-time child-owner's name neatly written in, probably by an adult); the jacket has some very minor chipping/creasing at the spine ends, with some very minimal paper loss]. (line drawings) An exceptionally nice copy of this historical novel for juvenile readers, a Newbery Honor recipient in 1932. Set at the court of Francois I, in 16th-century France, it describes the education and adventures of Pierre, who is training to be a knight; among the historical figures who pop up in the telling are Rabelais, Erasmus, and Sir Thomas More, and at one point the discovery of Leonardo da Vinci's sketchbook and airplane wings is described. Illustrated by Elizabeth Tyler Wolcott. [NOTE that although the book is a stated "First Edition," the Junior Literary Guild imprint appears on both the title page and the jacket spine, plus the jacket flaps are given over to JLG puffery; the trade publisher (Longmans, Green and Co.), however, is credited on the copyright page. My assumption is that this was a special (unpriced) jacket prepared for the initial distribution of the book to Guild members, which according to the jacket itself took place in October 1931. So while technically this might all add up to considering this copy a "book club edition," in the cataloguing I have given considerable weight to the "First Edition" statement and have described it as such. But if you think you'll find a nicer copy of what is, in any event, an extremely early printing of this book, then you are well within your rights to hold out for something better, and not buy this one. You probably won't regret it later, nope, not at all.]
