[water-staining along fore-edges of front and rear covers (interior of book not affected), otherwise just lightly shelfworn; jacket shows staining (internal but with some bleed-through) matching stains on book, a few small chips along bottom edge, a number of scratches on front panel, a bit of wrinkling and very shallow chipping along top edge, internally tape-reinforced along top edge]. Novel set in the then-slightly-near future (1940), about "a sociologist with radically advanced ideas" who had set up a penal colony on a remote Pacific island, with an inmate population comprised of "the worst types of criminals." The theory was that "they would finish their lives, segregated completely from the rest of the world, in a happy and normal manner" -- rather a weird sort of Utopia, but what do you expect from a radical sociologist -- but the result instead (surprise!) was mutiny and revolt, a situation made worse by an untimely earthquake.
