(price-clipped) [a good sound copy, lightly worn at extremities; the jacket shows just a bit of edgewear]. Novel about a young white teacher in a Harlem school, by an author who was (surprise!) a young New York school teacher. Sterling North, reviewing the book in the Indianapolis News, was less than impressed: "Being a budding writer he makes his hero also a budding writer. Being a young liberal he makes his protagonist a young liberal. Then he appends the usual affidavit that all his characters are imaginary. For 377 pages this purely imaginary hero, Matthew Stratton, mopes and gropes with problems of racial discrimination, problems of sex, problems of poverty and crime, problems of ego." He does allow, however, that the author "is at his best when he deals in forthright fashion with the tough, disillusioning life of the lower East Side, and with the even tougher and more disillusioning pattern of existence in Harlem."
