(price-clipped) [light shelfwear to bottom edge, slight bumping to bottom corners; jacket lightly soiled, with small tears and minor paper loss at a couple of corners, shallow chipping along top edge, a bit of fading at spine]. This novel deals with "a sensitive and educated Japanese soldier's personal Gethsemane -- his unwilling brutalization in a cause which held no illusions for him, and his regeneration through his own essential decency and contact with a kindly and free enemy people" -- certainly an unusual subject and theme for a novel written in the midst of World War II. (Although the action itself predates Pearl Harbor: it concerns a fairly Westernized young Japanese man who's conscripted for service in the Japanese war against China, and the jacket blurb remarks on the author's "portrayal of the soul sickness engendered by the Japanese cult of war."
