[good solid book, moderate wear to extremities, light dust-soiling to top of text block; jacket is a bit on the tattered side, with numerous tears and chips, browning at spine, etc. (jacket is now protected by a new clear mylar cover)]. "In this delightfully written and entertaining book, Vance Randolph, who first visited the Ozark country in 1899, and his collaborator deal with the speech of these hill people who live in their shacks 'down in the holler.' [They] deal with many phases of Ozark speech, including pronunciation, grammar, Early English survivals, taboos and euphemisms, the use of Ozark dialect in fiction, unusual words and meanings, and sayings and wisecracks, and conclude with a word list of further expressions. The narrative style of the book enables the reader to gain a true picture of the customs, superstitions, and philosophy of the hill people -- to observe, in fact, a way of life that is now rapidly disappearing with the encroachment of twentieth-century civilization." (And this, note, was more than sixty years ago!)
