[nice clean tight book, slight bumping to top corners, no other significant wear; jacket a teensy bit rubbed, faint edgewear, a touch of soiling to rear panel]. A "Double D Western," about a town trying to get rid of its long-time sheriff, seen by the community to which he'd "fought, bled and killed" to bring peace as "a dark symbol of [its] violent past standing in the way of progress and growth." Basis for the 1969 film of the same name, starring Richard Widmark and Lena Horne, for which the directorial credit went to "Allen Smithee," the DGA's house pseudonym, which in this instance anonymized two men: the original director, Robert Totten, and his replacement midway through production, Don Siegel. Patten was an amazingly prolific Western author who wrote under several names, but only a handful of his dozens of books were ever adapted for the screen.
