[nice clean tight copy with no significant wear; jacket has a couple of tiny edge-tears, shallow chipping at top of spine, teensy-weensy chip at bottom of rear panel]. Miriam Beard (1901-1983), described by one scholar as "the maverick daughter of Progressive reformers Charles and Mary Beard," apparently wrote just two books in her life: "Realism in Romantic Japan" (1930) and this one, jacket-blurbed as "an attempt in a new direction -- the biography of a type, instead of an individual." A dense and ambitious work, it sought "to present an assemblage of facts about the development of the business man and his influence on the rest of society," and is regarded as the first international cultural history of the businessman. The New York Times reviewer thought it a "brilliant and stimulating book." An updated, two-volume paperback edition was issued by the University of Michigan Press in the 1960s. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****
