[a solid clean book, with minimal shelfwear; jacket shows just a bit of wear to spine extremities]. "A vivid novel of plot and intrigue in the America that entered the World War -- Boston's Underworld -- German Spies -- Secret Service -- A wonderful love story -- the credulous and obstinate but lovable professor -- topped off by a gripping, dramatic court trial." The author was a Salt Lake City businessman who was also reported to be an "aviation enthusiast," and the book's plot draws on that interest: it involves the attempts of a German spy ring to steal the secret plans for a new airplane stabilizer (and to liquidate its inventor). The villain of the piece was described in a contemporary review as "as diabolical an individual as the reader could wish for," who's not only the head of an international spy ring but also does a little white slaving on the side. Originally published in England in 1929, and quite scarce; OCLC records only six copies of the British edition, and only one of the American printing.
