[good sound copy, light soiling/age-toning to edges of text block; jacket edgeworn, soiled, with various small nicks and tears, moderate fading to spine]. I don't know if there's a genre into which one can comfortably plug this little oddity from an otherwise unknown author, but for present purposes let's just call it "Ruminative Fiction." It's the interior monologue of a modern woman in love -- or not -- with several different men, yet too troubled (in some vague undefined female way) to make up her mind just what she wants out of love, or life, or anything. Even the poor jacket-blurb writer seems to be kind of vamping, describing it as a depiction of "the most ancient of happenings, a day of inevitability, told with a freedom and directness so characteristic of the present generation. A love story perhaps -- but not only love. A little sad, a little humorous, and not at all common. Interesting -- yes, quite certainly interesting." (Mm, yes indeed -- quite the thing, you know -- modern love and all that sort of rot.) The jacket design, while striking, is also kind of weird, and the line drawing of a naked woman that appears on the first page of the text promises some erotic titillation which I'm not sure the book actually delivers; and about the extremely suggestive title-page drawing of a very erect lighthouse, maybe the less said the better.
