(illustrated cloth; no dust jacket) [a nice solid book with just a touch of wear at the spine ends, inscribee's ownership signature on front pastedown]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, a lengthy and humorous inscription in a nice flowing hand: "Presented by order of / Timothy Pflueger, a / San Franciscoer, to / Mr and Mrs William / McCarthy, who are / San Franciscoers, / as scribbled by / Fred Rothermell, a / San Franciscoisterer." The tower of the book's title is a New York City skyscraper, a 72-story-tall building on 42nd St. dubbed the Aztec Tower (because the architect, one Paul DeMuth, was inspired by the Mexican pyramids, y'see), the construction of which, over a period of eleven months, dominates the first section of this novel. Upon its completion, DeMuth decamps for an r&r holiday in (where else) Mexico, leaving the wife and kiddies at home, which makes possible a little dalliance with a Mexican dancer he meets on the boat. He proceeds to enjoy a six-month interlude south of the border, which is rudely interrupted by his partner back in New York, who calls him long distance to tell him that the Aztec Tower has started to lean to the north, and that he needs to get back home pronto to help fix the problem before it becomes a catastrophe. As the New York Times critic described it, this situation "would be difficult to parallel in originality, tension, implicit dramatic power, elsewhere in recent fiction." Signed by Author
