[a touch of wear at ends of spine, otherwise a nice tight clean book; jacket shows some wear at spine ends, one tiny closed tear at bottom of rear panel]. The first novel by the future film critic, who reviewed movies for The New Republic from 1958 until just a few months before his death in 2013. His novels (he wrote about a half dozen, published mostly before he took up film criticism) were once described as "vaguely philosophical," and that seems accurate enough with regard to this one, which "is about the greatest of all mysteries -- man's sense of destiny and the workings of faith." Narratively, the story revolves around two men, both of whom are returning to their small hometown late in life: one a famous novelist who's decided to devote his few remaining years to producing his magnum opus, the other "an obscure haberdasher whose life has been one constant series of misfortunes, [and who] wants desperately to believe in something."
