[light shelfwear to bottom edge, a few spots of fading on both front and rear covers, minor soiling near bottom of front cover; jacket lightly worn along top and bottom edges, short closed tear and very slight paper loss at top right corner of front panel]. The narrative device for this novel of small-town life, set on a small island off the New England coast, is the use of personal-news items in the local newspapers as chapter headings. The author then "takes these notes, dull on the surface, and backward and forward, retrospect and present, weaves her picture of the town, its romance and trials, and of the Britton family and its comings and goings." The primary thread of the novel involves the women of the second and third generations of the Britton family attempting to break free of the established family's bonds. This was apparently the author's only book; OCLC records just 13 institutional copies.
