(price-clipped) [good solid book, modestly shelfworn, some discoloration to front endpapers (from laid-in newspaper clipping); jacket has a tiny chip at top right corner of front panel, a lightly larger shallow chip at top right corner of rear panel]. (B&W photographs) A up-close-and-personal account of an important segment of the life and career of the great African-American singer, written by the Finnish pianist and composer who served as her accompanist (and writer of many of her songs) beginning in 1931. He toured with her in Europe and America during the 1930s, and accompanied her at her famous 1939 concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Laid in is a 1965 clipping from a Jamestown (N.Y.) newspaper regarding an upcoming "farewell concert" performance by Anderson. Jacketed copies are surprisingly uncommon, especially given that the book went through at least seven printings.
