[appears to be an ex-ship's library book, with only a single stamp on the front pastedown marking it as such (the stamp is of The Cunard Steamship Company Limited); there is some staining on the bottom edge and fore-edge, the latter bleeding a bit into the pages for about the first half of the book, but otherwise relatively little wear; the jacket is a bit rippled, with some horizontal creasing along the top and bottom of the front panel, but all in all pretty decent-looking, having been long protected by a (new removed) library jacket cover]. Maltz's final published novel, about a group of escapees from Auschwitz during the last days of World War II. "The horrors of their situation are pitilessly invoked -- not only the dangers of pursuit and discovery, of betrayal, but also of starvation, the terrible cold, the loss of morale." Maltz, one of the "Hollywood Ten," was blacklisted for years in America, and hadn't produced another published novel since "A Long Day in a Short Life" in 1957; he never did secure an American publisher for this book, but he did put out a self-published edition in 1971.
