(no dust jacket) [slight bumping to bottom corners (teensy bit of fraying at lower corner of front cover), otherwise a solid clean book]. (pen and ink drawings) "This book offers high school juniors and seniors a broad, highly selective sampling of drama in our time, [presenting] four full length contemporary plays, two long plays somewhat condensed, and four dramatic episodes of various types. From the movies comes the script of a screen play for study; and from radio the complete text of a radio play." This being a textbook, there are "numerous study helps," including historical background notes, brief biographical sketches of the authors, vocabulary helps, study questions, and more. The full-length plays included are: "Watch on the Rhine" by Lillian Hellman, "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder, "R.U.R" by Karel Capek, and "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" by Robert E. Sherwood; the shortened/abridged plays are "Yellow Jack" (by Sidney Howard and Paul de Kruif) and "One-Third of a Nation" (by Arthur Arent). The "dramatic passages" are from "Winterset" (Maxwell Anderson), "Jacobowsky and the Colonel" (Franz Werful, adapted by S.N. Behrman), "Oklahoma!" (Oscar Hammerstein II), and "The Front Page" (Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur). The screenplay is from THE HUMAN COMEDY (screenplay by Howard Estabrook, from the William Saroyan book), and the radio play is "El Capitan and the Corporal" (by -- who else -- Norman Corwin). A concluding section, "Plays and Playwrights of Our Time," gives brief credits for a hundred or so playwrights, broken down by nationality.
