[moderate shelfwear (slight exposure of boards at a couple of spots on bottom edges of covers), lower corners slightly bumped, spine cloth just a little faded; jacket is heavily rubbed, splits along upper rear hinge and upper rear flap-fold, small tears and minor paper loss at most corners]. A follow-up of sorts to the author's 1947 tome "Mission Accomplished: A Novel of 1950," but considerably scarcer than the earlier book. (OCLC records 22 institutional holdings for "Mission Accomplished," but only five for this book; once bitten, perhaps.) Both books feature as protagonist U.S. Secret Service Agent Colonel Lawrence Marley, here spurred into action (and away from the arms of his beautiful wife) "on a frantic search for a ghost, which takes him to the offices of the Washington brass-hats, the fabulous homes of the nouveau riche on Long Island, and the dank, hushed-up laboratories in New York City," as he works "feverishly against time" to combat "the forces opposing him [which] are grouped to strike, awaiting only the signal of their contact man to touch the lever which will release havoc and destruction on the entire Western civilization." In a stroke of what was either wishful thinking or massive chutzpah, it's declared on the front jacket flap that "filming of [this book] as a major motion picture production is expected to start soon, with the picture's release planned for the last quarter of this year." Need I add that no such movie ever materialized
