(price-clipped) [spine slightly turned, light wear to both ends of spine; jacket lightly worn at extremities, a few tiny nicks at top of spine, a couple of small closed edge-tears, small puncture wound in spine]. Novel about a disillusioned 60-year-old Viennese playwright who visits a nondescript Italian seaside town in wartime Italy (1943), in the nostalgic hope of recapturing the past and something of the spirit of his younger self, but finds the little town "a microcosm of the world's holocaust," The author was a Hungarian expatriate who settled in Hollywood in 1947 after some time in Berlin (from which he was forced to flee the Nazis in 1935) and London. In America, he worked as a translator and screenwriter (notably for Alfred Hitchcock on I CONFESS), and was married for many years to actress Viveca Lindfors. He returned to Germany in 1971, and subsequently worked mostly in the theatre as a director and playwright.
