[a good sound copy, but with some water-staining on both front and rear covers (internally clean, however); the jacket is modestly edgeworn and very lightly soiled, still quite attractive]. Chicago-set mystery about the murder of a visiting New York banker, "found dead from morphine poisoning in a hotel room registered in another man's name." Given that Starrett was well-known as a leading Sherlock Holmes scholar, it's not surprising to note that this mystery follows a kind of Holmes-Watson pattern, with a hotel detective teaming up with a young drama critic who's also a "specialist in crime." Originally published in Redbook magazine (November 1934, as "Recipe for Murder"), it was issued in hardcover by Doubleday, Doran in 1935 and adapted that same year as a Fox Film B-picture starring Edmund Lowe and Victor McLaglen (but in such drastically altered form that the author wrote in his autobiography that "nobody was more surprised than [I] by the revelation of the killer's identity").
