(price-clipped) [a good sound copy, light shelfwear only; the jacket shows a little wear at the spine ends, slight fading to the spine, minor soiling and light foxing to rear panel]. A late novel by the author who made a huge splash with her 1941 debut, "Whistle Stop" -- the last, in fact, to be published before she went literarily silent for the last forty years of her life. (She completed one more novel, "Sudden Rain," in 1972, but a dispute with her publisher nixed its publication; the manuscript was discovered in her refrigerator after her death in 2002, and was published finally in 2005.) This novel centers around a war hero who's returned to a factory job in his hometown, and finds himself the "sole mainstay of seven dissimilar people," including his sister, his widowed mother and an impoverished aunt.
