[modest wear to cloth at spine ends, stamped "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Library, Culver City, Calif." on front endpaper but NO other markings of any kind; the jacket is edgeworn, with some minor paper loss at the top of the spine, and a single vertical crease down the middle of both the front and rear panels Crime novel about "an honest police detective -- devoted both to hs job and to his wife," but his wife has a problem: she "has money [and] likes living up to it -- and doesn't like living on a policeman's salary." Throw the honest cop's more cynical partner into the mix, and you've got the formula for this "suspenseful tale of how the lure of money became the trap for an honorable man." Basis for the 1965 film of the same name, starring Glenn Ford, Elke Sommer and Rita Hayworth, directed by Burt Kennedy from a screenplay by Walter Bernstein; the film was produced by M-G-M, which adds a little "association" interest to this particular copy.
