[minor shelfwear, slight fading to cloth along top edges of covers; the jacket has a few nicks along the top and bottom edges, a narrow yellowed strip across the top of the front panel, a little wrinkling near the top of the spine, and a short diagonal crease at the bottom corner of the rear flap]. (portrait sketches) "This is neither a journalist's account nor a historian's reconstruction from fragmented records of the past. [The author], today a leading German jurist, has been a participant in history. In [this book] he re-lives the long night of the Nazi era as one who fought the Hitler tyranny from the very beginning. One of the few survivors of the German Resistance, [he] traces the first awakening of anti-Nazi activity during his student days in the twenties. Later, once Hitler took power, [he] joined with othes of the intelligentsia to form the tiny clandestine groups that would become the core of the Resistance. He recounts the futile secret meetings of the conspirators; their careful, agonizing efforts to enlist the aid of weak and vacillating German generals; their anguished appeals for help to Chamberlain and other British officials, and the author's personal plea to Churchill just before the outbreak of war in 1939. [He] tells of the 'double life' of the Resistance leaders during World War II, of the seeming invincibility of the Nazis, and how each Nazi success inevitably thwarted the conspirators. He recalls his intimate involvement in the first attempt against Hitler's life, then describes the Generals' Plot of July 20 and the torture and terror which followed. Appendices include heretofore secret documents which illuminate vital aspects of the Resistance. Portraits of the leaders of the Resistance are by Hilda Simon, who also translated this work."
