The author's first novel, about down-and-out boxers, was the basis for the 1972 John Huston-directed film of the same name (for which Gardner supplied the screenplay), which starred Stacy Keach, a young Jeff Bridges, and Susan Tyrrell (who was widely praised, and Oscar-nominated as Best Supporting Actress, but whose career never really caught fire).
