[slight curling of front cover along right edge, one-time owner's name at top of front endpaper, a single margin note on page X of the Introduction but no other marks in text]. Trade PB (facsimile illustrations) An on-the-ground chronicle of the independent/experimental film world (particularly that part of it that was centered in New York), in the form of a collection of the author's Village Voice pieces during the period indicated. "Here are perceptive discussions of [Gregory] Markopoulos, [Stan] Brakhage, Jack Smith, [Michelangelo] Antonioni, [Kenneth] Anger, and [Robert] Breer; lacerating comments on Hollywood film; exhortations to young film-makers, unabashedly ecstatic reviews." Mekas, of course, was more than just a critic: he was also a poet and filmmaker himself, the co-founder of the influential journal "Film Culture," and the founding director of Anthology Film Archives, one of the most important institutions devoted to the preservation, study, and exhibition of film and video.
