[modestly worn copy, with a few light surface-scrape marks near the bottom of the front cover; pages age-toned, binding intact]. (Popular Plays and Screen Library) Series (2 sepia-tone film stills) Novelization of the 1926 MGM film THE DEVIL'S CIRCUS, starring Norma Shearer (depicted on the front cover) and directed by Danish-born filmmaker Benjamin Christensen (whose name is misspelled on both the cover and the title page). Christensen had been part of Hollywood's importation of European talent in the mid-1920s, but he didn't fare well, either at the studio (M-G-M) which brought him over or in subsequent employment elsewhere. THE DEVIL'S CIRCUS, his first picture here, was a success, but his second, the Lon Chaney vehicle MOCKERY, tanked and after knocking off four more pictures at Warner Bros. he headed back to Denmark. The rear cover has six small head shots of the movie's principal players, which in addition to Shearer were Charles Emmett Mack, Carmel Myers, John Miljan, Claire McDowell, and Joyce Coad. These Jacobsen-Hodgkinson "photoplay editions" were ultra-cheaply produced, and relatively few have survived the years in decent condition.
