(no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, minor wear to extremities]. This scarce California-set saga of an uninhibited and pleasure-seeking young woman -- the "twelfth living child" of a family of nomadic fruit pickers, of Polish-Italian-Mexican extraction -- was the first of two novels by this Oakland-born author, who was more active as a dramatist and sometime screenwriter. (He was also the younger brother of Roland Totheroh, best known as Charlie Chaplin's preferred cinematographer.) "Scenes of orchard harvesting near Fresno, the lazy winters in Los Angeles, and the isolation of the Mendocino coast are all skillfully drawn." (Baird & Greenwood 2429).
