[very light shelfwear, slight fading to cloth at edges of covers; the jacket is lightly soiled, with light edgewear and a couple of tiny nicks along the top and bottom edges]. "The Story of a Great American Reporter" -- boy, that must have stuck in some blurb-writer's craw. A valiant attempt to transform one of the more famously unattractive and widely disliked (and feared) women in Hollywood (not least because of her notoriously sour breath) into a "character" -- specifically, in the words of her daughter Harriet (in the "Dear Mom" letter that adorns the rear jacket panel), "a lovable, maddening, impressive, absurd, sophisticated, naive, noble, unprincipled, understanding, obtuse, admiration-inspiring, laughter-evoking character." Needless to say, though, if you got on her bad side (or Mr. Hearst's), your mileage could vary quite a bit. A cheaply-produced wartime edition, but this copy is in much better condition than commonly seen for this title.
