(price-clipped) [spine slightly turned, light soiling to top edge, light foxing to fore-edge; the jacket has small tears at several corners, and is missing a 1/2" x 2" vertical strip from the bottom of the spine panel, which is also a bit rubbed and lightly stained and has a little more paper loss at the crown (including part of the title)]. (pen and ink sketches) The founder of the Boy Scouts -- or the "Chief Scout," as he's billed here -- tells "stories of the wild animals of the jungle and people of many lands," with a solid bit of advice for his readers: "that you should always try to rely on yourself and not on what others can do for you." The penultimate book in his long string of similarly exhortatory books for boys (and occasionally girls), published just two years before his death in 1941 at the age of 83.
