[one tiny dent in bottom edge of each cover, no other significant wear to book; the jacket is edgeworn and a bit scuffed, with slight paper loss at top of spine and a half-inch puncture wound in the middle of the front hinge]. (B&W photographs) The first book in what became a popular, long-running series, presenting "the story of what has happened to famous personalities of yesteryear," illustrated by then-and-now photographs. Most of those included were entertainers, but there are a few major figures from other fields as well, including: Charles A. Lindbergh, Rockwell Kent, Red Grange, Alger Hiss, Jesse Owens, Gene Tunney and John T. Scopes (of the famous "Monkey Trial" of 1925). Interesting not just for the tidbits on the lives of the 100 or so celebs that the intrepid author tracked to their late-in-life lairs, but also as a window into a time when once-household names could actually sink into (or achieve) a kind of obscurity that seems postively quaint in light of today's hyper-celebrity-obsessed culture. It's like they say: nostalgia ain't what it used to be.
