[very light wear to extremities, otherwise a good sound copy; the jacket is moderately edgeworn and lightly rubbed/soiled, with a couple of tiny holes in the spine panel, slight paper loss at top of spine]. (B&W photographs) "The story of what has happened to more famous personalities of yesteryear," including "Axis Sally," Harold Lloyd, Paul Robeson, Butterfly McQueen, Joe E. Brown, Dizzy Dean, Pinky Lee, Andy Devine, Janet Gaynor, Billy Gilbert, "Gorgeous Gussie" Moran, William Powell, Artie Shaw, Ethel Waters, Fay Wray, Victor Mature, etc. -- approximately 100 in all, and (unless it's my imagination) in general a somewhat more "distinguished" group than featured in some of the other volumes of this popular series. (I mean, Thomas E. Dewey, for heaven's sake -- the guy almost became the President!) Say what you will, these books are absolutely compulsive reading -- provided, of course, that you're old enough or hip enough to have actually heard of a lot of the subjects. (The jacket on this book, by the way, states "Sixth Printing," although the book itself is the Fifth Printing, for the bibliographically anxious among you.)
