[a sharp-looking copy, modest wear to cloth at ends of spine, vintage bookseller's label (The Village Book Shop, Carmel, Calif.) on rear pastedown; the textured paper jacket is remarkably clean, the only notable flaw being some abrasion at the base of the spine]. This "story of life and adventure in San Francisco's Chinatown," centering around an immigrant, Lew Gan, "a lovable, foolish, altogether beguiling character, captures much of the full, exotic flavor of [the neighborhood] in all its turbulent growth and change through the tong wars, the Earthquake, the Great Fire, the World War, [and] the Depression." The author was a professor of sociology at Stanford, and in 1934, under a Rockfeller grant, had made a study of Chinatown, for which he collected "a large number of life histories and acquiring a deep and affectionate understanding for these little known people."
