(plastic-comb binding) [as new, with no discernible wear]. (B&W photographs, drawings) INSCRIBED rather fulsomely and SIGNED by the author on the inside front cover: "Hal dear -- / Through all the years / you have been the one / friend I can count on to / give me perfect advice and / dumb me has goofed a time / or two. / Hope you enjoy the book and / the part about you. / Love / God Bless / Marilyn N." The majority of this curious little book is devoted to advice on healthy living, dietary and exercise programs, personal care tips, and "old fashioned remedies"; the "memoir" part of it consists of "How I Got Started in Hollywood" (5 pages), "Unforgettable Parties" (14 pages; "parties" as in people, with anecdotal reminiscences of Joan Crawford, Howard Hughes, David O. Selznick, Buddy Rogers and Mary Pickford, Anna Sten, George Raft, and others), and "Gossip with Famous Names and Faces" (15 pages, with more anecdotal tidbits: Ava Gardner, Lucky Luciano, Hal Gefsky (her Hollywood agent, to whom this copy is inscribed), Charlie Chaplin, William Castle, Christine Jorgensen, etc.). Her account of working with Chaplin in MONSIEUR VERDOUX -- her first film role, and one of only two feature films in which she appeared before taking up her primary career as a casting director -- is probably the most interesting. There are a number of references in the text to "my husband Phil," who was screenwriter Philip Yordan -- of the "Yordan Publications" that issued this book, I guess, although at the time of its publication she and Phil had been divorced for almost fifty years, and both had remarried several times. (And speaking of marriages, laid in to this copy of the book is the invitation, in its original mailing envelope, to Ms. Nash's wedding to her third and final husband, Mack Hill, in 2000.)
