[moderate scuffing to the front cover, a bit of wear along the spine]. (B&W photographs) Scarce early issue of this important film journal. About one-third of this 128-page issue is devoted to articles and other materials relating to two then-current films about the JFK assassination: RUSH TO JUDGMENT, a feature documentary that challenged the conclusions of the Warren Commission, and YEARS OF LIGHTNING, DAY OF DRUMS, the USIA's "official eulogy" of the slain President. There is a long interview with filmmakers Mark Lane and Emile De Antonio (RUSH was based on the former's book), and a translation and condensation of a French review of the film by Louis Marcorelles. For YEARS, the magazine prints the complete transcript of the soundtrack of the film, some background on the USIA (United States Information Agency) including the political machinations that made it possible to show the film in the U.S. (Ordinarily, USIA films were restricted to foreign distribution; it required a Congressional resolution to exempt YEARS from the ban on domestic screenings.) An additional article, "The Use and Abuse of Stock Footages," focuses on other USIA films in addition to YEARS. Other features in this issue include: a discussion of two films on the civil rights question, TROUBLEMAKERS and A TIME FOR BURNING; an interview with Ingmar Bergman (and a review of his PERSONA); an article on Czech directors Elmar Klos and Jan Kadar; a discussion of the films of Jean Rouch, plus two interviews with Rouch; an article on themes and techniques in D.W. Griffith's films; a long book review section, including a review of four works on Josef von Sternberg.
