(no dust jacket) [moderate external wear, light bumping to all corners, two previous owner's names on front endpaper (one handwritten, one stamped), and two interesting bookplate on front pastedown (see notes and second scanned image)]. Probably a pretty standard treatise on the subject in that period, this comprehensive survey of Shakespeare's major plays and verse was authored by a longtime Cornell University faculty member, who was a professor of literature there from 1872 until he attained emeritus status in 1903. it was originally published in 1889, and was reprinted every two or three years, the last time in 1909, two years before the author's death. (It is also apparently thought highly enough of as a "classic" to have warranted an AMS Press reprint in 1972.) What makes this copy a little more attractive than the average are the two bookplates on the front pastedown: (1) an "Ex Libris" plate from "La Esperanza," apparently the home of F.W. and Mary Blackford, whose names are also on the custom-designed plate (Mrs. Blackford's ownership signature is on the facing front endpaper, with a 1911 date and "Mexico City" written beneath; the handwriting is over-stamped with a subsequent owner's name and address, in Altadena, California); (2) another "Ex Libris" plate, this one commemorating the Shakespeare Ter-Centenary in 1916, designed by Mrs. Robert C. Morris.
